The Sarawak state election must be held before the end of 2021. However, most people think it will be held soon given the uncertainty at the federal level and the recent Sabah state election. This election will likely be a watershed moment in Sarawak politics. For the first time since 1971, the governing coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, GPS, is not a formal member of the federal ruling coalition. Rather GPS stands for “Sarawak First” and state nationalism.

How does this mean for the election campaign and the state of federal-state relations in Malaysia?

Will the rise of state nationalism push Kuching further away from Putrajaya?

Two leading scholars on Sarawak politics, Prof Jayum Jawan and Prof James Chin will talk about this and other related issues.
