Facts about the Western Ghats:
The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri in northern Maharashtra and Sahya Parvatham in Kerala, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Western Ghats are a mountain range that run along the western coast of India, covering over 1,600 km from the Satpura Range in the north to Kanyakumari in the south.
It passes through Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, covering an area of around 140,000 km².
It has over 7000+ species of flowering plants, 1800+ non-flowering plants, 100+ mammal species, 500+ bird species, 150+ amphibian species, 6000 insect species, and 250+ freshwater species.
There are lots of tourist centres that have sprung up in the Western Ghats; such as Ooty, Thekkady etc.
The Kaveri River, originating from the Western Ghats, gives birth to India’s second-biggest waterfall, Shivasamudram, which powers hydroelectric plants supplying electricity to Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Kolar.
The forests in the Western Ghats absorb around four million tons of carbon every year, playing a vital role in maintaining India’s ecology.
Western Ghats are home to 13 national parks, two biosphere reserves, and several wildlife sanctuaries, making it essential to protect this region.
