Police say a woman who called 911 Wednesday to report finding an abandoned baby outside her Beltsville home has admitted to being the child's birth mother. FOX 5 spoke to that woman Wednesday afternoon, after she had claimed to have made the discovery.
The newborn baby girl was found outside a home on Shoal Creek Terrace at around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday. In an interview, Khiani Jackson told FOX 5 on Wednesday that she found the baby girl in her yard, and called 911 to report it.
Now, however, police say the woman who called 911 tells them she is the baby's mother. She told detective she had given birth inside her home Wednesday morning, and she became overwhelmed. She called 911 to report the baby being found, but police say at no time was the baby actually left outside alone.
During Wednesday's live interview, Jackson went on to tell FOX 5's Rick Boone that she walked out onto her back porch and heard the baby crying. She said she stepped off her steps and found the little girl. She went on to say that the child wasn't wearing any clothing, but she went inside and got her 1-year-old daughter's onesie, "gave her a diaper, and washed her up."
"She looked cleaned up, but I just wanted to wash her up because she was laying in the grass," Jackson told FOX 5, adding that she looked "pretty healthy and unharmed."
When asked who would drop a baby in her yard, Jackson said she did not know anyone who was pregnant.
"I was thinking maybe somebody saw me with my 1-year-old. You know, I tned walk around and let them play in the yard with the dogs, and maybe somebody saw me with them and thought that I would be in the proper, you know, where I could be in care of the baby," Jackson told FOX 5.
"It's overwhelming, it's very overwhelming," As a mom, I don't know what her circumstances were, but as a mom, I can't-- I couldn't, but if you need help, you should be able to talk to somebody, and maybe she didn't have that support system that she needed to be able to talk to somebody, or wherever she lived-- maybe they didn't know she was pregnant. I don't know, but it was very, very overwhelming."
"Just doing what a mama would do," Jackson added. "I couldn't leave a baby out there."
Police say the mother is now receiving medical treatment. The child is in custody of Child Protective Services. Police say criminal charges will not be filed at this time.
