I recently had the opportunity to read "The First State of Being" by Erin Entrada Kelly. "The First State of Being" is the most recent recipient of the Newbery Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award.

"The First State of Being" is the story of Michael, a young man who lives in the year 1999. He has a crush on his neighbor, is trying to deal with guilt over things he can't control, and he is terrified the world is going to end on December 31, 1999 when all of the computers roll over to 2000 (Y2K!). With all of this going on, Michael and Gibby meet a mysterious stranger who claims to be from the future and now he needs their help to get back home.
