In this city walk we’ll take a tour of Volksgarten – the People’s Garden – a beautiful landscaped park to one side of the Hofburg palace and Maria-Theresia Square where we saw in the previous video the monument of the prominent empress (    • Gorgeous Vienna | From Votive Church to Ma...   ).

Opened in 1823, the garden found use as a place for a gentle stroll or a concert visit. Various members of the Strauss dynasty performed in the park, for example, and premiered new music there and Johann Strauss even named a piece after the location – Volksgarten Quadrille (Op. 157).

Situated between one end of Burgtheater, the City Hall and the Parliament, the garden is home to Theseus Temple, Sisi memorial, Grillparzer memorial, and a couple of cafés but is most renown for it’s Rose Garden. You can find huge beds of tiered roses fill the sides of the Rose Garden: tall bushes at the back and smaller ones near the front and each of them a different variety.
