Who’s the greatest women’s basketball player of all time? Could it be someone from the first years of the WNBA? Or maybe one of their players in the past decade? Who knows, maybe the greatest women’s basketball player of all time never played in the WNBA at all.

The WNBA started in 1997, and it featured players such as Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, and Rebecca Lobo. However, the most successful player during the early years of the league was none of those three. Cynthia Cooper led the Houston Comets to the WNBA’s first four championships in history. Imagine building the first dynasty when the league is just starting up.

Cooper became the WNBA Finals MVP in all four titles from 1997 to 2000. She was also the league’s first MVP, doing it in the WNBA’s first two seasons. Cooper showed who the sheriff in town was, despite debuting at the professional league at age 34. However, four seasons of existence was too early to declare Cooper the greatest women’s basketball player of all time. Fans had to wait until the WNBA got more superstars as the league went on. But Cooper is definitely part of the conversation.

While not all successful women basketball players had to be in the WNBA, it does help to play in the world’s greatest professional women’s basketball league.
