An aurora, sometimes referred to as a polar light, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions.[nb 1] Auroras are produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate them into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere), where their energy is lost. The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emits light of varying colour and complexity.

Aurora polaris (norsk: polarlys) er et fysisk fenomen som forekommer når solvinden er kraftigere enn normalt, med store elektriske utladninger som slynger elektriske ladete partikler mot Jorden. Partiklene er elektroner og protoner som danner lys når de kolliderer med gassene i jordas atmosfære. Elektrone i gassene eksiterer, og gir ut energi i form av elektromagnetisk stråling. Polarlyset befinner seg i en høyde på mellom 90 og over 180 km over bakken. Fenomenet kan observeres på nattehimmelen i et belte rundt de magnetiske polene. Polarlys viser seg som et bølgende lys som varierer både i form, farge og styrke, fra mørkeblå innom grønn og gul, til rød og oransje.
