Описание к видео Your LinkedIn Profile Skills and Endorsements Section for Academics

You can add 50 skills to your LinkedIn profile. Challenge yourself to add all 50. Of the skills you add, you can select 3 to be "Top Skills" on your profile.

The skills you add to your LinkedIn profile now will change over time. This is especially true for your top 3 skills. As your goals change, so may the skills you want to highlight.

How often should you review your skills?

I recommend reviewing your skills to make sure they're still the ones you want to highlight each year. Or, as often as your goals change, like if you're
-thinking about making a career transition
-applying for major funding
-up for promotion
-heading on the job market
For many professors and researchers, reviewing your LinkedIn profile 1x/year works well.

What are hard and soft skills?
Hard skills tend to be role-specific. They usually require some training or knowledge received through experience.

Examples of hard skills:
-Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle
-Presentations, and presentation software like PowerPoint
-University teaching
-Curriculum design
-Research

Soft skills are "personal habits and traits that shape how you work on your own, and with others," according to Indeed.

Examples of soft skills:
-Creativity
-Communication
-Adaptability
-Critical thinking
-Leadership

Why should academics like you share both hard and soft skills?
Many of you are not looking for jobs. Sharing hard skills helps people understand what you're good at. It can also show what you're capable of, especially if it's not clear from other areas of your profile (i.e. Experience, Education). Sharing soft skills helps people understand more about you, and what it's like to work with you.

Broad vs. specific skills
One mistake people tend to make with their LinkedIn skills section is including only specific skills.

Let's look at an example with Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle. You might include the name of the platform you have experience in (i.e. Moodle). Someone visiting your profile who is familiar with online teaching may know what 'Moodle' is. But many people will not. So, if you only include 'Moodle' as a keyword, you may be limiting how much your profile visitors understand about that skill. You could include 'Learning Management Systems' as a skill as well. This ensures people not familiar with 'Moodle' have a better understanding of that skill. It also creates further understanding for anyone familiar with other types of Management Systems (i.e. Event Management Systems, Health Management Systems). Should you include both? If you haven't hit your 50 skill limit, yes! If you have, I recommend choosing the broader skill.

Here's another example:
Broad: Public speaking
Broad: Presentations
Specific: PowerPoint (software)
Specific: Script writing

To choose your 3 top skills on LinkedIn, click the 'Pushpin' icon next to each skill.

How should you pick which 3 to highlight? Go through your list. If people could only see 3 skills, which would you like them to be? Most people will only see these 3 skills because they're the ones that show up automatically when reading your profile.
