(30 Dec 2021) China's foreign trade performance of the year 2021 has been strong, but will likely face setback next year, the authorities announced on Thursday.
China's import and export volumes is expected to reach 6 trillion US dollars in 2021, a year-on-year increase of over 20 percent, said Ren Hongbin, China's Vice Minister of Trade.
"Our position as the world's largest trading nation is further consolidated," said Ren at a press conference on Thursday.
Ren attributed the fast increase to backflow of orders due to China's impressive reviving from the coronavirus pandemic earlier than the rest of the world and price increases of goods.
However, the growth rates of China's foreign trade are starting to slow down quarter on quarter.
The year-on-year growth rates of China's imports and exports this year were 29.7 percent, 25.2 percent and 15.2 percent in each quarter respectively.
Ren said China's foreign trade will face "a complex and severe situation" next year.
"It is likely we have to pass a big setback," he said.
He listed issues of virus variant spreading, uneven global economic recovery, interruption of supply chains and logistics, lack of chips, containers and work forces as difficulties in the year 2022.
China's import and export volume of the first 11 months in 2021 reached 5.48 trillion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 31.3 percent.
