The design of a parallel manipulator relies heavily on a combination of active (actuated) joints and passive (unactuated) joints. In a 6-DoF Hexapod, for example, the six main links are connected to the base and the platform via joints like ball joints or universal joints. Only the motion along the main axis of the linear actuator in each link is actively controlled. The numerous passive joints simply allow free movement but are constrained by the action of all the other parallel chains. This mechanical reliance on passive joints is another factor contributing to the robot's overall stiffness and simplified control for the main degrees of freedom.
