People measure all types of things every day—distances walked, sizes of clothing, quantities of food, and time for cooking. In this activity, children will trace their feet and cut them out to use as non-standard measures. Then they’ll create pictographs to represent the data they’ve collected.

Once children demonstrate how they’ve used these cutouts to measure, develop their mathematical skills by using math terms to ask questions and comparing this non-standard measure with standard measurement tools like rulers.
