The indoor composters/ kumbhas I am using are from http://www.dailydump.org/

I started composting two and a half years ago in regular earthen pots that are meant to store water after modifying them( closed the outlet taps with M seal and made holes for aeration). Ofcourse this wasn't going to be enough for my family , so I explored my options online and came across http://www.dailydump.org/ and ordered my first 3 tier large composter/ khumba from the Mumbai clone of this company. These pots are heavy duty and will last me many many years unless I were to drop one accidentally and break it into several pieces. If the damage is smaller, one can repair and join the pieces with M seal.

Shortly after this I started to vermicompost as well, to efficiently manage and recycle my organic wastes. Vermicomposting goes through organic wastes much faster than regular composting , however in peak summer , it is not possible to actively vermicompost as the heat generated by the decomposing food will heat up the worm bins and kill the composting worms. Hence in summer it is always a challenge to manage kitchen wastes and the need for more composting space.

I will review the newer version of the composter after a few months . When using the degrade plus compost with ease there is no need to turn the pile, however if one uses traditional browns one needs to turn the pile to introduce air into the pile to avoid compacting which may lead to a wet pile in turn leading to a foul odour. Moisture levels need to be checked weekly- if too wet, add browns , if too dry add water to moisten the contents.

SInce I don't have the luxury of a back yard, I am trying my best to recycle in my apartment in Mumbai and I hope to inspire people with this video.

I know my compost is ready when it is fully broken down and doesn't have any resemblance to the initial contents I had put in, is dark and rich and smells sweet like earth or the forest floor.
