Описание к видео Forgotten Computer Revival!

Yes, this is the promised "forgotten computer" video, and yes it really took this long to edit it. Think about that before pushing the dislike button!

This particular system was received in 2011 from an educational institution. The system was not in good shape then, and it has only gotten worse. Most of the housing has basically disintegrated, it is scuffed up, the CRT tube is beyond worn-out, and most of the capacitors are failing, and are from nasty brands such as Su'scon and G-Luxon to boot.

I'd imagine this didn't improve when I parked the system in the closet several months ago.

I had pilfered the hard drive, at the time a 40GB Western Digital, for the Pentium D project. I had selected an old but last-I-knew-serviceable Maxtor 40GB drive that I didn't care about to do the honors (since the system was just going to go back into the Closet of Forgotten anyways), and try a Linux install. It didn't go so smoothly, thanks both to a bad hard drive (which I later verified), and the fact that Linux once again can't get anything right.

Let it be known now that I have a powerful respect for what Linux and other free and open source software projects stand for. I'd like to think there will be a day where I can comfortably sit in front of a Linux box and do everything I do now. Unfortunately, there isn't yet light at the end of the tunnel, and every time I use it I just end up wanting to go back to Windows anyways. Something like an installer should just simply work. Who knows, maybe my disc really IS that far out of date.

I settled on putting the 15 GB Western Digital I pulled out of the system when I moved it to the 40 gig drive in the first place. THAT got it working.

Maybe at some point I will revisit this thing and try Linux again with a fresh install disc.
