Kenya's most unique sporting and cultural event, the Maralal International Camel Derby, returned this weekend with pomp, color, and high-octane action in Samburu County.

Butterfly People" can refer to Samburu people of Kenya, known for their bright, colorful beadwork and ornaments.

Internationally known for their beautiful and colorful ornaments, attire and hairstyles, the Samburu community are sometimes referred to as 'The Butterfly People'. They make clothes and ornaments from animal skin, beads, shells and brass. Men dye their hair with red ochre. Warriors (Morans) keep their long hair in braids, and dress in more colourful attire than other members of the community The women adorn themselves in beautiful multi-colored beaded necklaces, and other traditional jewelry Young warriors (morans) wear ornaments and dye their braided hair in red ochre. This women's necklace is made of elephant tail hair, each threaded with an old-style bead. This kind of huge collar necklace would only be made and worn by married women. It is made of rows of different coloured beads strung on wire with cooking spacers. Beaded leather earrings with beads in triangles. This is an unusual pattern of decoration, called Ldungot. These earrings are worn only by wives of the Merisho (the oldest living age-set). ceremonial goatskin cloak painted with red ochre and decorated with white cowries. The 32nd edition of Maralal International Camel Derby themed "Sporting for tourism, conservation and peaceful cultural interaction" was concluded today. Tourism and wildlife Cabinet Secretary Hon. Rebecca Miano flanked by Samburu County Governor H.E. Hon. Lati Lelelit, EGH graced the Maralal International Camel Derby hosting over 30,000 visitors and participants from across the republic and more than 70 countries around the world. The Cabinet Secretary and the Governor reaffirmed their resolve to grow and market camel derby as an international tourism product.

The derby participants celebrated camel riding, cultural diversity, traditional songs and dances. Moreover, athletes engaged in different races while exhibitors showcased their products.The first national astro-tourism initiative in Samburu County was launched recently in Samburu Sopa Lodge by the tourism and wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano.

Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa, Deputy Governor H.E. Gabriel Lenengwesi, County First Lady Bevelyne Lelelit, Director General of Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Dr. Erustus Kanga, former Woman Rep Hon. Maison Leshoomo, County Assembly of Samburu Speaker Hon. Steve Lenamarle and County Commissioner John Cheruiyot were among notable guests who attended the camel derby.
