Five years ago, the Creek Fire became one of California’s largest wildfires, burning nearly 380,000 acres and destroying more than 850 homes.

One of the most iconic losses was Cressman’s General Store near Shaver Lake — a landmark that had served the mountain community for more than a century.

Owners Ty and Tara Gillet lost everything when the fire swept through in September 2020. In the years since, they have faced delays, setbacks, and even a cancer diagnosis that put rebuilding on hold.

But they never gave up.

Now, five years later, the foundation has been poured and framing is set to begin. The Gillets are rebuilding Cressman’s bigger than before — with more space, indoor seating, and new ways to serve the community while honoring the history of the store.

This is their story of loss, resilience, and renewal.
