In English, for a change, simple past tenses are created simply by adding an “ed” to the end of a regular verb. Regardless of whether it is you, I, all of us, him, all of them, it doesn’t matter. The verb change is always the same. Just plop an "ed" to the end of the verb, and you are good to go! This is very different from French or Spanish or many other languages where there is a different conjugation for I vs you vs they, and sometimes, it even changes based on the gender of the I, you or they!
So, for once, English is WAY simpler!! So yay for that!! But, where it does become a bit complicated is how that “ed” is pronounced. There are 3 distinct ways in which this “ed” ending is pronounced. In today’s video, you are going to learn
- How the “ed” is produced in 3 different ways
- 3 rules which govern the way the “ed” should be pronounced for a given regular verb.
- We will test how well you learned these 3 rules by trying them out on different regular verbs.
Here are some term definitions:
- Simple Past tense: Tense used to convey an action completed in the past. E.g.: I walked home yesterday.
- Regular Verbs: Verbs that follow verb conjugation rules in the simple past tense. e.g. walk, jump, etc.

Know these 3 rules. "ed" is pronunced as:
- /d/ when the regular verb ends in a voiced consonant sound
- /t/ when the regular verb ends with an unvoiced consonant sound
- /ɛd/ when the verb ends with a /t/ or /d/.

This video is about How To Pronounce the "ed" in the Simple Past Tense in English. However, it also covers the following topics:
- Accent Reduction Techniques
- English Pronunciation Training
- English Rhythm
- English Vocabulary
- English Fluency
