Abstract:
This study is part of a larger ongoing research project that aims to determine the domains where library and information science as a field of study in the Philippines are situated by using the organizational structure of local higher education institutions. Universities and colleges offering undergraduate programs in LIS were identified using official data from the Commission on Higher Education. The online presence of HEIs was examined, prioritizing official websites, to identify the college/faculty where the LIS department/unit is under. Results show that there are five general domains where LIS is situated: ICT, Education, Arts & Sciences, Science/Engineering, and as an Independent Unit. Most LIS programs are placed alongside ICT programs; some recognize LIS as part of reading, literacy, and education, and several HEIs have a multi-disciplinal paradigm. With the perspective of higher education institutions and how they situate LIS-offering units within their organizations, this examination of structures is an initial step toward formulating the nature and identity of LIS as a field of study in the Philippines.
