The Ship of Fools goes back to the Greek philosopher Plato, who illustrates the
dangers of a political system not based on expertise and reason, where those who
are loud and confident, but ignorant, seize control of a ship leading to violence,
chaos and destruction.

The theme was expanded in an allegorical poem, written by Sebastian Brant, a
professor of law in 1494, who wittily lambasts the weaknesses and vices of his time.
Widely circulated and translated, Brant’s book appeared just before the Protestant
reformation and was interpreted as a thinly veiled commentary on the corruption and
abuses of power of the ruling classes and Catholic Church.

Subjects dear to Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch who vividly portrays a scene from
the book.

Brant’s cautionary tale about the hapless voyage of a ship steered by fools looking
for a fools; paradise and following Saint Grobian, the patron saint of vulgar and
coarse people seems just as relevant today.
