Some of the most desolate railroad country is found between Price Utah and Grand Junction Colorado along the base of the Book Cliffs. The former Denver & Rio Grande Western mainline connecting Denver and Salt Lake City runs through a valley of sparsely vegetated gray soils bounded by tall sandstone cliffs, making the area very hard to get into but resulting in some spectacular scenes, especially of Amtrak's California Zephyr train.
