FULL SCREEN FOR BEST VIEWING - Side-by-side comparison of shots from the 20th Anniversary remaster of DEAD/UNDEAD, a feature-length horror film originally shot on MiniDV, now upscaled to 4K using Topaz Video Enhance software.
Principal photography for DEAD/UNDEAD occurred in the town of Onaway, Michigan over a four-day weekend in August 2002. The film had a budget of only $1,000, and due to these constraints, it was shot on MiniDV - two Canon XL1-S cameras and two Sony TRV-900 cameras (with an additional scene added in 2004, shot on the Panasonic DVX100.) Some additional reshoots took place in Royal Oak, Michigan in September 2002.
The film premiered on October 30, 2002, just two months after principal photography. It released on DVD in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Thailand in 2005, but never secured an official release in the United States.
The final master of the film, also on MiniDV, proved to be too damaged for restoration, so the film had to be reconstructed from the original camera tapes. Each shot from the reconstructed edit was then deinterlaced in QTGMC (if necessary), and individually upscaled to 4K in Topaz Video Enhance using the Proteus model with custom settings. The upscaled shots were then re-color-corrected in Adobe Premiere CC using Lumetri Color and other tools.
The film was shot primarily using available light. Most night scenes were day-for-night (shot during the day then color-corrected to look like night in post-production.) 20 years ago, this meant completely desaturating the image and tinting it blue. Now, with modern color grading tools, we were able to retain the color that was originally removed, so the blood & guts used on set are finally visible in all their glory.
