The scientific revolution nominally started in 1543 with the publication of Copernicus’s “on the Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres” and was consummated by the publication of Isaac Newton’s “Principia” in 1687. The scientific revolution originated in the Christian West and definitely had Christian roots. Some of the key figures were Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler, Robert Boyle and Isaac Newton, who were all professing Christians. However, were they really Christians or were they really under cover desists? Deism maintains a belief in God but one who kicks off the universe but subsequently is not interested in intervening. Deists believe in a mechanistic, deterministic universe, which has little place for supernatural intervention. Deists may talk of God but not of a God who intervenes in the form of Jesus Christ. Deism became the forerunner of atheism in the West.
