Aaron Alexander, Tara Erickson & John Humphrey react to Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), the joyful musical comedy sequel directed by Bill Duke that brings Whoopi Goldberg’s beloved character back for another unforgettable adventure. Picking up after the events of Sister Act, Deloris Van Cartier is once again called upon by the sisters of St. Katherine’s — but this time the mission takes her into the classroom.
Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost, The Color Purple) returns as Deloris, who goes undercover as Sister Mary Clarence to help a struggling Catholic school whose music program is on the verge of being shut down. Tasked with teaching a class of rebellious students, Deloris discovers a hidden group of talented young singers and turns them into a choir capable of competing in a statewide music competition. Among the standout students is Rita Watson, played by Lauryn Hill (The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, The Fugees), whose powerhouse voice leads to some of the film’s most memorable musical moments — including the electrifying finale performance of “Joyful, Joyful.” The cast also includes Kathy Najimy (Hocus Pocus, King of the Hill) as the lovable Sister Mary Patrick and Maggie Smith (Harry Potter, Downton Abbey) returning as Mother Superior, once again reluctantly relying on Deloris’ unconventional methods.
From the classroom chaos to the iconic choir rehearsals and show-stopping musical numbers, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit blends heart, humor, and gospel-inspired performances into one of the most beloved feel-good comedies of the 90s.
