There is something magnetic about James Meraz, a longtime faculty member of our Spatial Experience Design program. His passion for creativity and design are apparent when observing his critiques or chatting with him in the halls. But it’s the abundance of warmth and talent for inspiring students to deploy their design skills for the social good that makes him the kind of professor his students will remember and refer to for the rest of their lives.

This video captures him in his Joshua Tree studio, a space he hand-crafted from the ground up as an example of spatial experience design in action. We caught up with him out there shortly before the next cohort of students was due to arrive for his Eco Research Lab, a transdisciplinary sustainable design studio focused on hands-on explorations in biomimicry, biodiversity and next nature. James and his students will spend a week on site in Joshua Tree studying nature’s biological forms and systems, and speculate about nature’s time tested strategies to propose solutions to human design problems.
