Only 1 U.S. school placed in the top 10 of the high school division at iGEM, an international synthetic biology competition. The other top teams included one from South Korea, one from Taiwan, and seven from China.

While the team was proud of their project, it was the judges' opinions that ultimately mattered. Our school was the only U.S. school in the top 10 worldwide, alongside one from South Korea, one from Taiwan, and seven from China.

Considering our education system's global ranking and per-pupil spending, this contrast is particularly striking. The results highlight areas for reflection and improvement within the US education system.
