There's a novel, but worrying, trend affecting classrooms around the world: the introduction of Artificial Intelligence. This isn't about robot teachers. It's about so-called "intelligent tutoring systems" – systems that aim to personalise the instruction according to the individual student's capabilities. But their approach to teaching, knowledge transmission from the system to the students, is outdated. It ignores the importance of constructing knowledge and social engagement. It ignores skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. And it raises challenging ethical questions. However, these are early days for AI in education. The future possibilities are far more interesting: such as AI-tools designed to support students working collaboratively, or AI lifelong learning companions, or AI assistants for teachers. There is exciting potential but worrying trends. AI in education is too important to be left to the computer scientists or the entrepreneurs. Instead, we should focus on the learning. PhD, University of Oxford. Lecturer of Learning Sciences and Innovation. Leading and speaking on Artificial intelligence in Education (AIED) and Co-author of three related books. Advises the DfE and the UK National Commission for UNESCO on the pedagogical, ethical and social implications of AI in education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
