We (almost) killed our variegated billietiae! - How to save difficult propagations

Описание к видео We (almost) killed our variegated billietiae! - How to save difficult propagations

Here's a follow up to our propagation video. Sometimes propagations don't go as planned even with experience with the same species. Here's the ultimate technique we have to save propagations that looks like there is almost no hope.

It is a technique derived from the understanding of how root rot is not caused by an excess of water, but a shortage of oxygen. By using an air stone and an aquarium pump, we prevent anaerobic (lack of oxygen) conditions - thereby giving the propagation its best chance to survive.

Lava rock helps with:
1) Holding the plant upright during this process
2) Provides surfaces for growth of beneficial bacteria which outcompetes rot inducing bacteria and promotes root growth
3) Provides a convoluted path for the bubbles to escape, increasing the dissolution rate of oxygen into the water
4) Provides a surface for condensation to form - allowing the stem to be hydrated without being submerged in water.
