Great Grandmother's Griddle and Donegal Spud Basket

Here are two lovely little things that I came across in the home of Cathal McGowan in Galway on Thursday the 5th of September. Cathal is proud Donegal man and the I couldn’t help notice the forged griddle in his house. It turns out that it belonged to his great grandmother who was from near Kilcar in Donegal an dpassed down to him via his mother. These were hand-forged and used for drying off bread and it’s lovely to find one in a house that was owned by the family.

We are both looking to get two copies of the griddle made up by a traditional blacksmith here in Wexford in the next few weeks and will share a video of the making of it down the line. he also had a great little spud basket too which he remembered from his youth and got a basket maker to make him one a few years back.
