00:00 West Highland Sojourn (Robert Sheldon)
00:22 I. Stow-on-the-Wold
02:14 II. Bradford Ballade
04:35 III. On Derwentwater

Inspired by a journey through the western hill country of England and Wales. This delightful piece is inspired by some of the lovely villages in this region. Stow-on-the-wold, a market town in the Cotswolds, was having a folk festival during the composer’s visit, and the music of the first movement attempts to capture the mood in a jaunty style. The second movement was written after a visit to Bradford-on-Avon, during a romantic evening walk by the lantern-lit stream, downriver from Stratford. The third movement borrows its style from folk dance rhythms heard while sitting on the shore of Derwentwater, in the Lake district near the Scottish border.

7:06 Grace Before Sleep (Susan LaBarr, Arr J. Eric Wilson)

Composed in 2011, grace before sleep was inspired by a poem of thanks written by Sara Teasdale. A quiet opening builds into on gorgeous, resounding climax before coming to a more reflective, thankful close. This wind setting, arranged in 2013 by J. Eric Wilson, Director of Bands at Baylor university, draws upon a warm sororities of the concert band to reflect Labarr’s musical content and Teasdales poetic sentiments

11:34 Fortress ( Frank Ticheli)

Fortress was composed as a tribute to the composer’s former band director, Robert Floyd of Richardson, Texas. Although Ticheli was already an international award winner, this was his first published work for concert band . The first 19 measures of Fortress are taken from the composer’s score piano score for the 1987 theater production of Moliere’s Don Juan. Of the dozens of short steps, each of the each of which portrays a different character, this passage represents the dual personality of Don Alonzo-on the one hand chivalrous and honor bound, on the other hand sinister and ruthless. This piece is based upon short motive ideas, which Ticheli develops, layers, and sets in imitative textures throughout the piece. Each work can be traced back to the interval of a voluntary tritone, an important trend throughout the work.
