A group of human rights experts from the United Nations have condemned the abuses of power committed by the government of Nicaragua under the leadership of President Daniel Ortega dating back to 2018. The experts accuse the Ortega regime of weaponizing the justice, legislative, and executive functions of the state against the country's citizens.

The UN Under-Secretary General for Human Rights has also called for the restoration of citizenship and political rights for those who have opposed the Ortega regime, including Bishop Rolando Álvarez. Recently, Nicaragua stripped 222 political prisoners of their citizenship and deported them to the #UnitedStates, while #BishopAlvarez was transferred from house arrest to prison.
