I have spent the last few months learning to test supplements, everything from uncovering the amount of protein that's actually in the product to the heavy metals that can be in anything sourced from the earth. I'm still a long way from my goal of being able to take anything off the shelf and test it but you would be surprised at the amount of research that is already out there and very few people know about it.
