Bangla New Year 1422 (Pohela Baishakh) Celebrated at
Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC, USA

Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC organized a cultural
evening celebrating the Bengali New Year 1422 (Pohela
Baishakh, the first day of the year), amid traditional fanfare,
mirth and festivity on Sunday, 19 April 2015.

Shedding the past year’s pangs and pains to oblivion, the
members of the Bangladeshi diaspora attending the celebration
welcomed the New Year with a new pledge to enrich the
thousand year’s Bengali culture and heritage even living
abroad.

Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Mohammad
Ziauddin made brief remarks welcoming the Bengali New Year
1422 at the celebration held at the Bangabandhu Auditorium
and wished happy and prosperous life of all. He requested
parents and guardians, in particular, to make sure that the new
generation being brought up in this country (USA) uphold their
self-identity and maintain links with the roots.

The merrymakers in large number attired in colouful sarees and
pajama-panjabi turned out in the function, the biggest and
most colouful festival of the Bengali year.

Songs and dance portraying Bengali culture and heritage were
presented on a tastefully decorated podium. Traditional Pahela
Baishakh song—Esho hey Baishakh—Eso, Eso-- was sung in
chorus by the embassy family members.

Artistes of ‘Bangla School’, ‘Barnamala Shikhhangan’, ‘Ekota’
and ‘Friends and Family’ performed songs and dances. Besides,
artistes Kamrul Hasan, Praiyanka Bose, Dinar Moni, Seema
Khan and Rabiul Islam Shishir presented solo music and dance
enthralling the audience.

The embassy offered Bengali traditional food—Panta Bhat,
fried Hilsha, lentil, green chilli and onion for the guests on the
occasion.
