Giant waves continue to batter the section of road that collapsed into the sea at Torcross.

This was the scene at around 7.40am on Wednesday, as viewed from the south, looking towards Strete Gate and Blackpool Sands in the distance.

High tide was at 7.47am – 5.58 metres above the chart datum – and big waves continued to come in for some time afterwards.

Parts of the A379 between Torcross and Slapton were washed away on Monday night, with a 200 to 300-yard stretch of the southbound lane eaten away.

At this end, a larger chunk of road disappeared, along with steel-reinforced sea defences and part of the Torcross Tank public car park.

Properties in the village also suffered damage.

The area was hit by storms Goretti, Ingrid and Chandra in January, leading to initial damage to this section of road.

Over the past week, Devon County Council had been working to add extra rock protection to the road.

However, further bad weather caused catastrophic damage overnight on Monday.

The council's highways team is assessing the main damage and conducting further investigations over the full length of the road.

The scenic road stretches for around three miles between Torcross and Strete Gate.

It runs along Slapton Sands, a narrow strip of land and shingle beach which separates the freshwater lake of Slapton Ley from Start Bay.

The council has warned that the damage could cost "tens of millions of pounds" to repair.

The road was previously washed away during Storm Emma in March 2018.

It reopened later that year following extensive repairs.
