Every spring, two of my uncles, Armando and Miguel, visit me on my family's farm in Merced, California to help me harvest honey. They are beekeepers themselves and have hives in Salinas, California. They are two of my dad's younger brothers and they've taught me so much on my beekeeping journey. They've taught me how to care for the bees and how to carefully harvest honey.

Every spring, there is an abundance of flowers on the farm for the bees to forage on. This is when they're most active after a few months of winter. They collect as much nectar from the flowers as they can. They can produce an excess of honey so they're able to construct more comb to build out their hive. Springtime usually means they can produce more honey than they are able to store in their hives, so we can be sure that even after a honey harvest, they'll have enough to survive the winter. Any honey we remove after we harvest, they will be able to replace shortly after we remove any from their stores.

In this video, you'll see that this hive didn't build their comb straight along the wooden frames. We removed a little honey but as you see in the video, it was really difficult to remove any of the honeycomb. In these situations, it is best to leave the hive as is so you don't destroy parts of the hive. After the harvest, the bees will go back to rebuilding the damaged part of the hive and will begin to fill it with honey once again. This process can take between 2-3 weeks for them to both repair and fill the hive.
