This is Apero who is a 3 year old Poitevin mule. His breed is native to the region of France he lives in - the Poitou Charentes - and is known for being the strongest breed of mule in the world. Mules are much stronger than an equivalent size of horse and are also able to kick forcefully in more directions, meaning that correct training is essential to make them safe to handle.

Apero has now lived at Les Ecuries du Saumort for a year and has been having on-going training in basic groundwork and handling throughout the year. He has formed a strong bond with his owners Christian & Christine and also with Sarah. He is showing willingness to learn and work and has made many friends (both human and equine) through his sweet and gentle nature. (Once you get over the size of him!!!)

Mules are highly intelligent, more so than both horses and donkeys, making them very interesting to work with! Apero has shown this quality throughout his training providing a huge learning experience for all those involved with training him!

For the past month or so, Sarah has been working alongside Apero's owners to advance his training on the lunge and under saddle. Since he is only 3, the training is being taken slowly, at Apero's pace, to form a solid foundation on which to build upon in the coming years.

Apero has now reached the stage where he is comfortable in walk on the lunge with a little bit of trotting and he has accepted Luca on his back while being led. His training will continue at this gentle pace, with the hope that in the future, he will be able to pull a traditional cart in a working mill and enjoy leisurely rides under saddle with his owners.
