Scandals Amongst the Nobles
Chronicle of the Times Episode 103 | 1729 & 1812 & 1840
In today’s episode we look at three cases of scandals in the aristocracy.

Our first case from 1729 involves Lord and Lady Abergavenny and a good friend, their neighbour to their Sussex estate, Mr Lydell. Mr Lydell is a frequent visitor. Servants are aware of the intimate relationship between her ladyship and Mr Lydell, but it is not until she is caught in the act that his Lordship becomes involved.

Our second case from 1812 and 1840 involves the Prime Minister, William Lamb, Lord Melbourne, who was famously a huge support to Queen Victoria in her early days on the throne.

William Lamb and his wife were the darling of society for a short time. And then Lady Caroline Lamb began acting in a unseemly manner that became known throughout society. Her quite public affair with handsome bad boy, Lord Byron, was all anyone could talk about and was an embarrassment to William Lamb as he was making forays into politics.

The second scandal involving Willima Lamb, now Lord Melbourne , was an accusation of his having a dalliance with a married woman. The charge was brought forward by the married women’s husband who had already tried to extort money from him. Lord Melbourne was a sitting prime Minister at the time.

We take a look at the scandals amongst the nobles in today’s episode of Scandals of the Past.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
