SENEGAL coach Pape Thiaw could be BANNED from the World Cup after the chaotic scenes that marred his side’s African Cup of Nations triumph.

The Lions of Teranga were crowned African champions after Villarreal mdfielder Pape Gueye’s extra time strike.

But that came after the final stages of the initial 90 minutes descended into farce with Thiaw ordering his players OFF the pitch after hosts Morocco were awarded a penalty for the final kick of the match.

Senegal were already furious that a later “winner” by Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr had been ruled out by Congolese referee Jean Jacques Ndala.

But Ndala then gave the spot-kick to Morocco for an alleged foul by West Ham’s El Hadji Malick Diouf on Real Madrid’s Braham Diaz.

As Diaz prepared to take the penalty, Thiaw told his players to leave the pitch in protest, althoguh former Liverpool striker Sadio Mane did not do so.

Incredibly, Diaz opted for a “Panenka” strike, which fell tamely into the arms of Senegal’s former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, before Gueye scored the winner at the start of the extra 30 minutes.

The incident sparked mayhem in the stands with Senegal supporters throwing objects.

Thiaw did apologise in a TV interview after the match but his scheduled press conference was cancelled after a FIGHT in the main media room.

Discipplinary sanctions for the tournament are under the auspices of the African confederation CAF.

But Fifa President Gianni Infantino slammed the “unacceptable scenes” and “condemned the behaviour of some Senegalese players and members of the coaching staff.”

Infantino added: “The deplorable scenes we witnessed must never be repeated. The competent disciplinary bodies of CAF must take appropriate action.”

That spells major problems for Thiaw, who will get a minimum touchline ban and heavy fine, although he could face a total ban from football.

As Senegal will not play another competitve game before the World Cup, any sanction will be enforced in the summer, with his side to to face France, Norway and an intercontinental qualifier – Iraq, Bolivia or Suriname – in Group I.

His players are more likely to face fines although suspensions are still possible.

CAF said in a statement: “The Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat last night.
