Synopsis: Peppermint Spiral follows Angel, a high schooler confronting an intimidating, ghastly creature while facing his family’s high academic expectations. As the pressure becomes overwhelming, Angel starts a dangerous path towards relief, rather than asking his loved ones for help.

Reel Start students wrote and developed the short film to address the ongoing pressure that modern teens face and how these high expectations can become a detriment to their mental health.

The script was written with the guidance of writing mentor Jen Kim (Sausage Party TV, The Chair) and developed by students over 22-weeks, Reel Start’s program team and volunteers. Students then collaborated from artists and animators from fellow nonprofit Exceptional Minds to bring their script to the screen. Finally cast members from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Shamon Brown Jr, Brady Noon, and Seth Rogen brought the characters to life.

This collaboration between RS and EM was made possible through the support of Paramount Nickelodeon Animation and their commitment to a more representative next generation workforce.

What is Exceptional Minds?
California nonprofit of the year, Exceptional Minds is a professional training academy and studio for visual effects artists and animators on the autism spectrum. Based in Los Angeles, we are a nonprofit organization with a mission of employability, self-sufficiency, and inclusion.
