Camel, Bactrian (Camelus bactrianus)

Although there are over 2 million Bactrian camels alive today, like ours nearly all of these are domesticated, due to their ability to provide meat, wool, hair and milk.

Due to this widespread domestication, the estimated number of remaining wild camels is only around 950 individuals.

These wild camels can only be found in small pockets of North West China and Mongolia and have been placed on the critically endangered species list by the IUCN.

Fun Facts...

Camels have adapted to protect themselves from the heat and sand of the deserts. They can open and close their nostrils; their ears are protected with a lining of hair, whilst bushy eyebrows and two long rows of eyelashes protect their eyes.

A camels hump contains not water but fat, giving them a large reserve of energy for a harsh desert life.

How do you tell the difference between a Bactrian camel and a Dromedary? Turn the 'B' on its back and you have 2 humps. Turn the 'D' on its back and you have 1 hump!
