Day trip to Muttrah. A lazy stroll along the corniche and browse of the souk.

Before the discovery of oil in 1970, Muttrah was the center of Commerce in Oman. Strategically located on the way to China and India, it is perhaps one of the oldest marketplaces in the world. The souk, or arab market is traditionally made of mud and palm leaves now it has been modernized to cater to tourists and shoppers.

In Oman, ramparts and forts are a common sight. In the 1500s the Portuguese invaded (Oman) and built forts in the coastal towns to control the Arabian Gulf trade route. Once a powerful empire, it has a rich history of occupation and liberation, opulence and poverty. Now under the leadership of Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said the country is categorized as a high-income economy and one of the most peaceful country in the world.

We headed to the fort but unfortunately it was closed due to restoration work. Above the souk is a fenced off settlement that is off limits to the public. We wandered anyway not intending to intrude but only to take photos of whitewashed walls and beautiful weather-beaten doors and rusted metal locks.

The souk is a delight to the eyes and the senses ... the heady scent of frankincense , the aroma and sizzle of deep fried samosas, the sweet and refreshing taste of chilled freshly made yogurt drink, bedazzling display of goodies, brisk breeze, mesmerizing blue waters. All these and more make Muttrah a favorite hangout for both tourists and locals.
