NAYPYIDAW, MYANMAR — Only a fraction of the results have been announced in Myanmar, but it appears Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party could be headed for a landslide victory against the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party in the first openly contested national elections in 25 years.

Around 80 percent of Burma's 30 million eligible voters braved some crazy heat and incredibly long lines to cast their ballot with more than 10,000 election observers on hand. The leader of the USDP Htay Oo, who lost his own seat, has pretty much conceded defeat.

Of course the Burmese election process isn't quite perfected yet as a quarter of the parliamentary seats in the upper and lower house are reserved for the military. The NLD would have to win two-thirds of the seats up for grabs to have a winning majority.

Another bummer is Suu Kyi cannot become president as the Myanmar constitution bars anyone with foreign children from the position. Her two sons have British passports. Hundreds of thousands of people, including minority Rohingya Muslims were also denied voting rights.
