In most states you will be automatically disqualified from getting your real estate license with a criminal record, but there may sometimes be corrective measures you may be able to take in order to obtain your real estate license.

Breaking the law does come with consequences and unfortunately one of those can be disqualifying you from ever becoming a real estate agent and obtaining your real-estate license. Laws will vary from state to state and are subject to change so make sure to check what the current laws are in your area.

Real estate laws can be extremely restrictive in allowing people with past criminal records obtain their real estate license. You may be completely disqualified from obtaining your license with a criminal record, but in this video I’m going to go over how you may still be eligible to get your real estate license even with a past criminal record.

Now I know there shouldn’t be any one practicing real estate who may be a threat to others, but I also acknowledge that we all have a past and people do have the ability to change in their lives. And if you have, and now maybe you want to get your real estate license, become a real estate agent, and have a successful career in real estate, then it may be possible for you.

The most important thing to consider is what kind of criminal record you have. Generally, you will get a pass on misdemeanors on your record and should be able to still get your real estate license. However, there is a lot less tolerance for felony crimes and any kind of s. offense on your record. Once again, this is a measure that is most likely taken for the overall safety of the public.

In most, if not all states, you will automatically be disqualified from obtaining a real estate license with a felony record or s. offense.

Let’s take NY for example where Article 12-A Real Property Law of New York states If you’ve been found guilty of a felony in New York or any other state it’s an automatic disqualification for getting a real estate license. Being found guilty of any type of s. offense (many of which are felonies) is also an immediate disqualification.

Every state will be different in the laws of what specific crimes will limit you from becoming a real estate agent and in what capacity. Some states will make the process easier or harder depending on the laws.

The good news is that there may be a process of corrective actions you can take for you to be able to still obtain your real estate license even with a prior criminal record.

Once you do get a real estate license, whether or not you already have a criminal record, you are not in the clear. If you are convicted for a crime after the fact, your real estate license will be revoked.

Once again I do believe that everyone has the right to turn their life around and if you are serious about getting your real estate license, becoming a real estate agent and are willing to put in the work then it may still be possible for you despite your past and previous mistakes.
