Autism in girls can be difficult to diagnose because of the current system criteria for diagnosing people on the spectrum.

There are some characteristics that are common in both males and females when referring to autism spectrum disorder but it is more difficult to diagnose people who are female because of certain areas of their characteristics.

Here is the list of the five top most common characteristics that you can use to identify autism in girls.

1 Masking
Masking is where someone will act like a different person in order to fit in in social situations and in gatherings outside of their comfort zone to fit in. But will struggle once they are home and in their own environment because of the stress and exhaustion from this masking.

2 Selective Mutism
Lots of girls on the spectrum will have selective mutism where they will be unable to speak in certain social situations and retract from speaking in big public areas.

3 Obsessive Collection
Lots of girls with autism will collect certain things this could be a series of books a series of DVDs or a series of their favourite make up or hair product that they become obsessed with.

4 No Cuddles
Another characteristic of girls on the autism spectrum is the inability to want to be picked up when they are younger children and hooked on their younger children and also they may not like Huggs later on in life the older they get still wanting to avoid cuddling.

5 Difficulty Following Instructions
Not this characteristic is common in both males and females but it is something to look out for when trying to see if email could be on the spectrum and that is the difficulty in following instructions laid out written or orderly asked of the person.
