Artificial Intelligence has become a must-have for everything including executive job searches, says Gary Erickson, managing partner of Executive Search Partners. His group specializes in placing Chief Information Officers in big businesses, but ESP also places other senior executives.

During the video interview, Erickson answered the following questions:

Q: How is the overall job market?

Answer: bad. The recently released government jobs report shows that the economy is stagnant. The Wall Street Journal reported last Saturday that that job growth has been sluggish for months. Cause: Tariff impact and cautious CFO’s. One interesting statistic is that the median length of unemployment is trending upward with the average time is now up to 10 weeks.

Q: So – if you are a senior IT executive looking for your next position, what can you do to maximize your changes of finding your next job?

Answers: Finding your next position is a full-time job and most jobs come via networking. So – network, network, network. Set a goal – try and meet at least via phone, 6-8 people a week. Friends, referrals, IT events such as SIM and Michigan Counsil or Women in Technology.
b. Stay in touch with your network.
c. Only apply for positions for which you are a fit
d. Customize your resume to fit the position.
e. Add in a short section near the top of the resume listing 5 reason’s why you are a fit for the position. If you are an IT executive, one of those needs to be related to AI.

Question: You mentioned AI. How has this changed the requirements for IT executives?

Answer: – You need to know AI and have examples of what you did with AI. Be prepared to discuss specific application ideas for the position for which you are applying.
