Vampire Weekend “Classical“ live May 10, 2024 @ Kilby Block Party (Salt Lake City, UT) 

WOW! Vampire Weekend just killed their set at Kilby Block Party last night! Everybody just loved it. Almost every song, or maybe every song, was an altered, extended, or jam version. Their touring band is so talented, with so many instruments going at once. Ezra interacted with the audience a bunch. He was genuinely celebrating being back in SLC and @ Kilby Court in particular, as he explained between songs that they played Kilby Court in December 2007, before they released their first album. He asked how many people were there and tons of people cheered, and then he deadpanned that there were only like 30 people there in 2007. Vampire Weekend was jetting out from SLC to NYC to play SNL tonight.

"Classical" is a great song from VW's new album "Only God Was Above Us." VW doesn't release albums super often, but when they do it, they always release fantastic albums. They literally don't have a bad album yet. So many great songs on this album. Typical of VW's heady lyrics, this upbeat jazzy song may be about something deeper and more vexing below the surface. Perhaps its about the injustices/cruelty inflicted through the ages by the rich/powerful/ruling class on everyone else, but it gets celebrated as awesome and classical with enough time, and history repeats. Or maybe it's about something else.
