AD 458, the Western Roman Empire has been in steep decline, owing to barbarian invasions, economic decline and the incompetent governance of the Theodosian dynasties emperors – Honorius and Valentinian III.

Now a new emperor has arisen to the throne of the Roman Empire in the West, his name is Majorian. He is an experienced army officer and his ambition is nothing less than the full restoration of the Roman Empire in the west. Yet while he is ambitious, there are enemies aplenty. To the east, Ostrogoths control Pannonia and much of Illyricum, to the north, Rugi and Alemanni control the lands beyond the Alps. In Gaul, Franks and Burgundians gear their kingdoms for the coming struggle. In the west, the Visigoths and Suebi control all of Hispania and south across the Mediterranean the Vandals raid and maraud the cities.
