Lighting a lamp is one of the most sacred traditions in India. Poor or rich, everyone follows this tradition everyday and especially during festivals and special occasions. We look at 2 of the more popular shlokas chanted while lighting the lamp, with their meanings.

We also explore why this is such an important tradition and the scientific reason behind it. We need to understnd that science as we know it, is of western origin and it cannot yet explain a lot of the science given in our ancient sanskrit texts. Indian science was very advanced hundreds of years prior to the rise of western science. And everything my parent's generation laughed at, is being discovered once again only in our generation, while a lot more is still an enigma to us. So, I am giving you the science as it has been handed down to us. For eg: Old texts tell us that qualities like prosperity are nothing but forms of energy, and that they can be attracted through the use of the 5 elements.
