Peter Johannessen, Assistant Professor of Public Policy, Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, University of Virginia

His research explores how popular participation shapes the local policy-making process, including projects that focus on local electoral responsiveness and the design of participatory governance institutions in Brazil. These projects engage with broader debates about democratic representation and the consequences of decentralization reforms in the developing world. For his work, he received the 2018 Susan Clarke Young Scholars’ Award from APSA’s Urban and Local Politics Section. His research has been published in Comparative Political Studies.

Michael Abramowitz, President of Freedom House.

Freedom House is a U.S.-based 501 U.S. government-funded non-governmental organization that conducts research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom, and human rights.

Nicole Bibbins Sedaca, Chair for the Global Politics and Security Concentration in Georgetown University’s Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) program and a Professor in the Practice of International Affairs in MSFS.

She has also served for ten years in the United States Department of State, working on democracy promotion, human rights, human trafficking, religious freedom, refugees, and counterterrorism.

Christopher Sabatini, Senior Research Fellow for Latin America, US and the Americas Programme, Oxford University.

Dr Christopher Sabatini is senior fellow for Latin America at Chatham House, and a lecturer in discipline in the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University where he has taught since 2008. Chris is also on the advisory boards of Harvard University’s LASPAU and of the Inter-American Foundation.

His areas of expertise include democracy and human rights, foreign policy in the region, social inclusion, resource extraction and community rights, Venezuela and Cuba.

He is also the founder and executive director of the new research non-profit, Global Americans and the editor of its news and opinion website www.LatinAmericaGoesGlobal.org.
