The year is 1757. The young Nawab of Bengal, Siraj ud-Daulah, is fiercely resisting the growing power of the British East India Company. But his greatest threat is within his own court: his commander-in-chief, Mir Jafar. Poisoned by ambition, Mir Jafar strikes a deal with the British officer Robert Clive. He promises to betray his master in battle in exchange for the throne.
At the pivotal Battle of Plassey, Siraj’s massive army of 50,000 faced just 3,000 Company soldiers. It should have been an easy victory. But Mir Jafar held back his forces, sowing chaos and panic. Siraj fled, his army collapsed, and Bengal, the wealthiest province in India, fell not to military might, but to a single, devastating act of treachery.
Mir Jafar was crowned the new Nawab, but it was a hollow victory. He was a puppet ruler for the British, who held all the real power. He was immediately forced to pay the British staggering sums of money in what became known as the "Plassey Plunder," bankrupting his own kingdom. His British masters saw him as incompetent, and after just a few years, they unceremoniously kicked him off the throne.
Mir Jafar's own son, Miran, ordered his brutal execution. Local folklore insists that with his dying breath, Siraj unleashed a curse upon Mir Jafar and his entire bloodline. One by one, the conspirators began to meet gruesome ends. Siraj’s scheming aunt was drowned; a powerful banker was thrown from a fort.
The most dramatic fate was reserved for Miran. While on campaign, his tent was struck by a single bolt of lightning, killing him instantly. As for Mir Jafar, legend says he contracted leprosy and died in 1765, a lonely, disgraced, and hated man. His palace now lies in ruins, said to be haunted by the ghosts of the traitors.
The curse supposedly had a second target: to completely extinguish Siraj ud-Daulah’s lineage. After his execution, his family was hunted. But according to research, a loyal official may have smuggled Siraj's young son to safety. To save his life, the boy was secretly adopted by a Hindu family, his royal Muslim identity completely buried. In this way, the direct male line of Siraj ud-Daulah was erased from official records, surviving only in the shadows under a new name and a different faith.
So, was it a real curse? Or is there a more logical explanation? Historically, Mir Jafar's downfall was inevitable. His power was never his own, and his British masters treated him as a disposable pawn. The violent deaths of the other conspirators were also common in the brutal and unstable politics of 18th-century India. Miran's death by lightning was a dramatic coincidence, and the hunting of a rival’s heirs was standard, cruel political practice.
