iPad Air OLED project cancelled for now
I didn’t think this was real in the first place so seeing the news that the project was cancelled made me feel vindicated. Stupid story that was never a thing. But actually the amount of detail in why, makes me realise it was genuinely something Apple was looking at.

It seems the cancelation comes down to is single vs double stack OLED panels from Samsung.
The current tech that Samsung has is single stack, but Apple is not happy with the longevity of the technology, in that it may fail too quickly for how long iPads tend to be in service. Double stack which Apple wants would give up to 4x the service life with double the brightness, but Samsung is only willing to develop production for this with long term production guarantees for the panels, which would limit Apple’s opportunities to innovate and change their products.

This just comes back again to one of the biggest “why don’t they just” issues that Apple faces. When we heard last year that 120hz promotion for iPhone screens was delayed, it wasn’t because Apple was holding the feature back, drip feeding it out. It’s not that Apple didn’t care enough to include it or that they were cutting costs. It’s that the scale at which Apple makes their products is basically unheard of. Its that there wasn’t anyone who could build the displays to the spec that Apple needed in the millions of units that Apple would require. Apple wants to make the best possible iPhone every single time, and I don’t think they’re ever sitting in Cupertino thinking “no, we have to save this to make next years phone worth buying”. Its the same as when people say Apple won’t push the performance of their chips unless other catch up. That is bullshit. Apple will make their chips as fast as they possibly can every generation, as long as that doesn’t make efficiency or reliability suffer. It makes far more sense to push out the chips as powerful and as fast as Apple can, because if they have a widening performance gap between themselves and the rest of the market, that will only grow their market share. Most people don’t upgrade any of these devices on an annual basis, its all about gaining the share of the market when you can and making sure the products that are available when people are ready to upgrade are as good as possible, so they choose your brand.

We overtook Jai on Tech Hyped - back when we had 3k subs and he was on around 7500 ( I think) I challenged him to race to 10k. If you’ve not checked out his channel yet he covers basically every single beta release for iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS and probably MacOS too now he’s finally joined the Mac family, so go give him a sub if you haven’t already.

#iCaveAnswers why doesn’t Apple have USB-C on the iPhone still?

#icaveanswers I think the Mac Pro 2013 Silver is the most beautiful computer ever. However it's a very dated computer which is slow and use a lot of electricity. I have one of those. Do you think it'll be possible to mod it with the logicboard from a maxed out M2 Mac mini, and then 3D print the backplate for all the port holes to fit the Mac Pro and brackets to stabilize the internals? Then I could sell the original hardware on ebay and level the cost that way?

#icaveanswers - have you seen any EEC registration for a new m1x mac mini? As far as I can tell, we only have EEC registrations for the m1X macbook pro laptops
