“From Discovery to Insight: Uncovering the Role of MUC5B in Lung Fibrosis”

Established in 2024, the Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Lectureship Award recognizes extraordinary research accomplishments by CU Anschutz faculty. It is intended to showcase impactful and innovative research from any research discipline. Two awardees are recognized each year, and the awardees each present a lecture during the fall and spring. The event is hosted by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

David Schwartz is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Immunology at the University of Colorado and serves as the Associate Dean for Translational Sciences. He previously served as the Chair of Medicine at the University of Colorado and the Director of the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences at the NIH.

He has made numerous contributions toward understanding the role of the environment and human genome in the development of complex human diseases. These efforts have provided new insights into the genetics, epigenetics and genomics of pulmonary fibrosis, asthma and innate immunity. Dr. Schwartz’s lab was the first to clone the human TLR4 gene and demonstrate that variation in this gene decreased immune responsiveness to endotoxin, enhanced the risk of Gram-negative sepsis and protected individuals from the development of coronary artery disease. In addition, the Schwartz lab demonstrated the importance of locus-specific DNA methylation in the development of allergic airway disease by directing the maturation of T lymphocytes toward a Th2 phenotype. Most recently, his work has led to the recognition that genetic susceptibility—and specifically MUC5B—plays a role in the etiology and pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis, which will be the subject of his lecture.

Dr. Schwartz is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and the American Clinical and Climatological Association. He is a recipient of the American Thoracic Society Scientific Accomplishment Award and the Amberson Lectureship Award, the Bonfils-Stanton Science and Medicine Award, and the Alton Ochsner Award.
